The Making Of: Lycan's Sanguine Moon Set - Dota 2

Set Name: Sanguine Moon
Time Of Completion: 1.5 months (With breaks)
Final Store Link: http://www.dota2.com/store/itemdetails/20145

Well awesome news, and another item crossed off my bucket list..Our Lycan set got accepted a while back into DoTA2 by Valve and is now on sale. At the time I couldn't believe it, but we've been fortunate enough to put out quite a few new sets and items since then. Thanks to the awesome founder of Polycount, I was put in touch with a very talented artist called Brent (BounchFX) to bring a concept to completion in 3D. Originally created for the Valve endorsed Dota 2 Polycount contest, I decided to go with a less popular character that I really liked, Lycan. Despite his unfortunate ultra-nerf, I though his lore was really cool and decided to go off a set themed after 'The Fall' event in his story.

Leyendecker Study: Man Reading Book

Created over the course of 2 1/2 days, this study (Based off of a 1916 piece) kicked my ass in ways I hadn't anticipated, but that was the goal. Compared to some of his other work, this was one of his most subdued, color wise.

If this study allowed me to realize anything, it's just how graphic some of Leyendeckers choices were. His tie and jacket were pretty much flat black, but looked rounded thanks to subtle touches (like the highlight on the tie) and the cross contour gold patterning, which gave it form. Also the way he laid down his strokes was truly remarkable. Learned quite a few things.

Leyendecker Study: Marching Band

Leyendecker: Pure stylized genius. Way ahead of his time, and I look forward to doing a lot more studies of his work. Moby Franke kept giving us lectures back in school about how his work ultimately influenced TF2, I just didn't gain a full appreciation for his work till being in the industry for a few years. 1 1/2 hour study.

Ratrods+Mechs=Good times.

Click for giant size.
Did the style development for these mechs based off of theme suggestions from the other devs. Ratrods+Mechs= Fun challenge.

Used sketchup to block in the weapons, painted in the mechs freehand. Wanted to do a paperdoll approach for customizing the mechs in concept, like the example below. Unfortunately this project didn't quite come to fruition, but it was a blast. In retrospect I should have pushed quite a few areas.

Introduction.

To anyone who visits, just a short intro. My name is Sirio Brozzi, and I'm an Italian transplant currently pursuing a dream of concept art and beyond in the United States. Following a 3 year pause from posting much work, or putting myself out there I've come to need a place to express myself, experiment and pursue directions that bring inspiration and happiness outside of the 9-5 space.

This will be that little corner, and I hope to use it often. One lesson that's stuck with me to this day came from a man called Moby Franke, who lectured us multiple times at school about the importance of developing a cohesive, appealing style, and the impact that Team Fortress 2 continues to have till this day. I've pondered what he told us over the years and following multiple experiences in this industry I've come to grips with the direction I need to head in. This blog will cover that shift in thinking.

My three pillars: Humility, Passion, Open Mindedness.

Thank you for reading. Now on to the art.
